Live in a deer populated area like me? They’re the cutest things and their babies are cuter! But the way that they destroyed my tulips before I knew any better was incredibly frustrating. We now have a fence around the back yard that does a relatively good job of keeping them away from my more tasty garden snacks. Not to mention the help added by a 75 Lb goober of a pupp… dog. Full grown one year old dog. He’s 18 months ok?! Mommy’s baby big boy who screams at deer. Fortunately, there are a variety of deer-resistant perennials that you can add to your garden both in and outside your dog guarded fence to keep deer away. Here are some of the best options:
1. Lavender
I could never create this list and not talk about Lavender. I plan on winter sowing LOTS of it. Lavender is a beautiful and fragrant perennial that is also deer-resistant. It requires full sun and well-drained soil, making it perfect for a rock garden or a sunny corner of your yard. Lavender is a versatile plant that can be used for many purposes, such as a natural air freshener, a cooking ingredient, or a relaxing aromatherapy agent. Additionally, it attracts beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies, making it a great choice for gardeners who want to support local ecosystems.
2. Poppies
Poppies are another beautiful and deer-resistant perennial that gardeners can add to their gardens. They are easy to grow and come in a variety of colors, including red, orange, and pink. Poppies are a great option for gardeners who want to add a pop of color to their garden. They attract beneficial insects as well! However, it's important to note that poppies can be toxic to pets, so gardeners with pets should take care when planting them. I planted them in my front yard along the driveway where my dog doesn’t have access to them. It’s at the very bottom of a hill so we aren’t too worried about seeds blowing far enough to reach the back yard but do be careful because poppies likes to spread their seed!
3. Coneflower
Coneflower is a popular perennial that is also deer-resistant. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes and is extremely easy to grow. It also attracts butterflies and bees to your garden. It spreads well and for me, I want my whole yard covered in flowers, so I’m happy for any flower that helps me!
4. Foxglove
Another deadly one and aesthetically one of my absolute favorites! Foxgloves are a beautiful and visually striking deer-resistant perennial that gardeners can add to their gardens. They come in a variety of colors, including white, pink, and purple, and can grow up to several feet tall. Foxgloves are a great option for gardeners who want to add height and structure to their garden, as well as a pop of color. Additionally, they attract beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to your garden. Don’t forget, it is toxic!! Plant away from animals and children.
5. Yarrow
Yarrow is a beautiful and hardy perennial that is also deer-resistant. It has delicate white or pink flowers that bloom in clusters atop tall stems, they’re beautiful and have spread well in my front bed. Yarrow is also drought-tolerant and easy to grow, making it a low-maintenance addition to your garden. Yarrow is popular in European folk medicine, as it contains flavonoids, plant-based chemicals that increase saliva and stomach acid to help improve digestion. Yarrow may also relax smooth muscle in the intestine and uterus, which can relieve stomach and menstrual cramps. An all around must have!
By adding these deer-resistant perennials to your garden, you can enjoy a beautiful and thriving garden without having to worry about deer eating your plants. These plants are low-maintenance, easy to grow, and provide a variety of benefits to both you and your local ecosystem. Happy gardening!
